#246 swoop into moments of pitched black

When man first encountered this total solar eclipse I wonder how and what they felt. Did they presume it was doomsday or end of the world?

It was wonderful to gather understanding from Nasa Eclipse website supplying the path of the total eclipse  http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse.html. Rarely its path falls along major cities.

Modern and advanced technologies have given me the chance to follow this rare event of total solar eclipse, lasting several to 6 mins or so at different locations, on the television screen in Singapore.

The CNA screened the moments at  Varanasi,  Uttar Pradesh, India — referred to as ‘a city of temples, a religious capital of India and a city of learning’ — an old city dated 3,000 years old. Many gathered in the river believing they would be cleansed. However in March 2006, terrorists placed bombs in a temple and railway station killing about 20. Then 20 months later, a bomb blast in the civil court that killed 20 and injured about 100.

The camera followed the bright diamond ring and without warning we were swooped into a moment of deep darkness!

Following the videoclip online, I could see a black ring outlined the sun and moon during total eclipse followed by an aura of corona:  http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videoshow/4805740.cms.

Some wealthy Indians took a flight just to watch this eclipse!!!

CCTV10 in China gave a 3-hour coverage of the event at different locations — Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhejiang Tianhuangping, Wuhan, Hangzhou, and Shanghai  which I followed on the U-channel from 8am-11am. They even gave us a preview to the panda’s reaction during the eclipse! The eclipse path travels along Leshan where the gigantic Buddha statue sculpture was. This statue was not damaged at the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.

In Japan, the eclipse at  Yakushima   and viewed from the passenger ocean liner at sea gave me another experience http://www9.nhk.or.jp/live0722/. When the diamond ring effect or Baily’s bead appears, the sun shone like a star of David!

Apparently the next time the path of totality occurs is 34 years later?! I certainly won’t live to see that.
